L'ultimo viaggio di Angelo accompagnato dalle Pive

Uno dei vecchietti della “Graspa”, il luogo di ritrovo di noi suonatori di piva, è venuto a mancare i giorni scorsi. A quasi ottant'anni se ne è andato il sig. Angelo Simonini, persona discreta e gentile che ci accoglieva sempre nel locale con grandi sorrisi e che amava scattar foto mentre noi, con i nostri strumenti, riempivamo l'aria di musica al termine delle consuete cene. Angelo, per il suo ultimo viaggio, aveva lasciato detto alla famiglia che avrebbe voluto esser accompagnato dal suono dei nostri strumenti. E così è stato. Marcoledì 21 settembre di mattina, una piccola rappresentanza delle Pivenelsacco, ha accompagnato il feretro per le strade di San Cesario sul Panaro intonando brani che lui ben conosceva ed amava.

One of the old men from "Graspa", the gathering place for us bagpipe musicians, left us a few days ago. At the age of almost eighty, Mr. Angelo Simonini passed away. He was a dicreeet and gentle person who always greeted us in the room with big smiles and loved taking pictures while we filled the air with music with our instruments at the end of our usual dinners. Angelo had told his family that he wanted to be accompanied by the sound of our instruments during his last journey. And so it was. On Wednesday 21st September, in the morning, a few members of Pivenelsacco accompanied his coffin through the streets of San Cesario sul Panaro, playing those songs that he loved and knew so well.

Una rappresentanza delle Pivenelsacco in Danimarca

Una piccola rappresentanza delle Pivenelsacco sarà i prossimi giorni a Christiania, nota anche come la “Città libera”, un quartiere autogovernato della città di Copenaghen (Danimarca) fondata nel 1971 da un gruppo di Hippie. L'esperienza sarà senz'altro molto interessante e le Pive Emiliane per la prima volta faranno sentire le loro possenti voci. A portare in Danimarca i nostri strumenti oltre a Gino, Manuel e Mar ci saranno Franco Calanca e la fisarmoncista e percussionista Anna Palumbo. I nostri amici oltre all'esecuzione dei brani del Cd della Pivenelsacco, cercheranno di insegnare al pubblico gli antichi“balli staccati”della nostra tradizione e siam certi che con un maestro come Gino il successo sarà notevole!

Pivenelsacco in Denmark

In the next few days, a small representation of Pivenelsacco will be in Christiania, also known as the "Free Town", a self-governed district of the city of Copenhagen (Denmark), founded in 1971 by a group of hippies. This experience is certainly going to be very interesting and the Pive Emiliane are going to make their powerful voices be heard for the first time. Together with Gino, Manuel and Mar, Franco Calanca and percussionist and accordionist Anna Palumbo are also going to bring their instruments to Denmark. Apart from performing tracks from Pivenelsacco's CD, our friends are also going to try and teach old "staccato" dances from our tradition to the public. We are certain that, with Gino directing, we are going to be successful!

Domenica 11 settembre a Bentivoglio le Pivenelsacco han presentato il loro primo cd all'interno della sala delle conferenze della magnifica Villa Smeraldi (sede del museo della civiltà contadina). Il pubblico non era molto, per la concomitanza con tante sagre e feste nelle zone limitrofe, ma ha dimostrato di apprezzare molto l'esecuzione dei vari brani presentati in scaletta tributando ogni volta calorosi applausi e ha gradito gli interventi sulla storia e sulla costruzione dello strumento da parte di Franco Calanca (che ha costruito tutti i nostri strumenti). Per la prima volta Giovanni Tufano, il nostro percussionista, ha allestito un set di strumenti vari adatti ad ogni brano e ha impreziosito tutte le melodie con accompagnamenti davvero molto originali. Nel corso del concerto per la prima volta è stato eseguito un bel brano a due voci composto da Giovanni Lorenzo Baldano
(un compositore del 1600 che ebbe grandi successi e si distinse sia come compositore letterato e poeta) che presenta difficili passaggi tecnici intitolato “Pastorali”e che, in due versioni, potete ascoltare nel nostro CD.

Presentation of our CD

On Sunday 11th September, Pivenelsacco presented their first CD at the conference room of the magnificent Villa Smeraldi (where the museum of rural culture is). The audience wasn’t numerous, because of many fairs and festivals all taking place at the same time in surrounding areas, but it showed very appreciative of the performance of the various tracks presented in the line-up by applauding warmly every time. The crowd also enjoyed Marco Calanca’s intervals on history and on how the instrument was built (Calanca constructed all our instruments). John Turfano, our percussionist, put together for the first time a set of various instruments suitable for each track and enriched every melody with extremely original musical accompaniments. During the concert, a beautiful song for two voices composed by Giovanni Lorenzo Baldano (a very successful composer from the 1600s who distinguished himself both as a literate composer and as a poet) was performed for the first time. This track presents a series of difficult technical transitions called “Pastorali”, that you can listen to in our CD in two different versions.

Essere originali con la Piva Emiliana

Molti musicisti cercano personalizzare il proprio strumento o di fare in modo che qualcosa li contraddistingua, nel mondo del rock abbiamo tanti esempi con chitarristi o batteristi, ma anche noi suonatori di cornamuse, talvolta, cerchiamo di render il nostro strumento originale. Un dettaglio molto particolare lo potete vedere in questa foto scattata il 29 agosto al Mirandola Buskers. Chiara Temporin dei Cisalpipers, affezionata al suo pappagallino Calypso, si è fatta realizzare in legno un minuscolo tappo in legno da mettere sul bordone basso con scolpita l'immagine del suo adorato pennuto. Questa piccola scultura l'ha realizzata un anziano signore dell'appennino bolognese. E a proposito di originalità eccovi una foto scattata il 1 settembre, il meccanico della Ferrari Marcello Tioli, appena finito il suo turno di lavoro a Maranello, ancora con la sua fiammante tuta rossa indosso, si è subito messo a studiare i brani tratti dall'ultimo cd delle Pivenelsacco. Guardate il bordone basso della sua cornamusa con il drappo. Nel corso delle prossime settimane il gruppo modenese avrà vari impegni di presentazione del nuovo disco e quindi vi raccomandiamo di seguire il nostro blog in modo da esser aggiornati sulle nostre date.

The art of being original

Many musicians make an effort to personalize their instruments and/or to make them original. In the world of rock and roll we can find many examples of guitarists and drummers, but also bagpipe players sometimes try to make their instrument original.
You can see a very important detail in this picture taken the 29th of August at the Mirandola Buskers event. Chiara Temporin, of the Cisalpipers, is so fond of her pet parrot that she had a small wooden hood made and shaped like her adored bird. This cork is to be placed on the drone and was created by an old artisan in the mountains surrounding the city of Bologna.
Also speaking of originality, this is a picture taken the 1st of Septembe of Marcello Tioli, a Ferrari mechanic who at the end of his work day immediately set to study the songs from the latest Pivenelsacco CD.

Il cd delle Pivenelsacco "Cento Rami"

Finalmente è uscito il primo cd delle Pivenelsacco. Si tratta di un disco unico nel suo genere che vede impegnate ben sette cornamuse con accompagnamento di percussioni. Nel cd, che contiene brani classici di straordinario impatto sonoro rielaborati dal maestro Bonvicini a tre voci, anche i motivi più tradizionali delle nostre terre. Oltre alle cornamuse italiane in alcuni brani ci sono la chitarra, l'organetto, varie piccole percussioni, la meravigliosa arpa celtica del maestro Benozzo che si impegna anche come cantante in una sbalorditiva esecuzione con uno stile alla Tom Waits. Insomma un cd che tutti coloro che amano la musica classica e tradizionale per cornamusa non posson non avere nella loro collezione. All'interno un libretto con tante bellissime fotografie a colori tutti i testi delle canzoni e la storia di ogni brano spiegata in italiano e in inglese. The first CD of Pivelnelsacco has finally been released. The CD is unique in its own genre and even includes seven bagpipes accompanied by percussions. The CD contains the traditional sounds of our land together with classical tracks of extraordinary impact that have been reworked and adapted for three voices by maestro Bonvicini. In addition to Italian bagpipes, other instruments appear in other tracks, such as the guitar, the accordion, various small percussions and the wonderful Celtic harp that belongs to maestro Benozzo, who is also involved in a stunning Tom Waits style singing performance. In short, it’s a CD that classical and traditional bagpipe music lovers can’t exclude from their collections. Inside is a booklet with a series of beautiful colour photographs, all song lyrics and the history of each track explained both in Italian and in English. To order the CD, you just need to send an e-mail to vet.fabio@tiscali.it and you will receive your own copy at home for the cost of €15.

Le Pivenelsacco alla Notte Bianca di Ascoli Piceno

Le Pivenelsacco in formazione ridotta, han suonato durante la notte bianca di Ascoli Piceno. La manifestazione, che ha richiamato migliaia di persone e tanti musicisti con strumenti di ogni genere, è stata anche la prima occasione per Manuel Aravecchia di cimentarsi con il gruppo per un evento esaltante ma al tempo stesso decisamente faticoso. In tutto son stati eseguiti ben 25 brani, alcuni di estrazione classica altri di tradizione popolare. Verso la fine della serata il gruppo è stato invitato in un ristorante dove ci si è scatenati con una serie di brani tradizionali pieni d'energia per oltre 20 minuti. Al termine dell'evento a mezzanotte passata, Manuel, che è anche il più giovane del gruppo con i suoi 25 anni, ha detto di sentirsi così esaltato e felice per l'evento e per i tanti applausi ricevuti e che avrebbe volentieri ricominciato da capo!!! Il resto dei musicisti invece, tutti vicini alla cinquantina non vedeva l'ora di farsi una bella dormita!

Members of Pivelnelsacco played at Ascoli Piceno’s “Notte Bianca”. The event, which attracted thousands of people and lots of musicians with all kinds of instruments, was also Manuel Aravecchia’s first opportunity to join the group for an event that was at the same time very exciting and definitely exhausting. Altogether, 25 songs were performed, some of which classical and others linking back to folk tradition. Towards the end of the evening, the band was invited to a restaurant where we got loose for over 20 minutes, performing a series of traditional tracks that were full of energy. At the end of the event, after midnight, Manuel, whose age of 24 makes him the youngest member of the band, admitted to be feeling so happy and exalted because of the event itself and thanks to the applause and enthusiasm received that he would gladly have started all over again!!! The other members of the band, all in their fifties, couldn’t wait to get a good night’s sleep instead!!!
