Albinea (RE) Il giorno delle Cornamuse/Day of bagpipe

67th Anniversary Bingo Operation…Day of the Bagpipe
It took place at Alibinea, a touching event dedicated to the memory of those killed in the attack in Villa Rossi
and Villa Calvi, in the presence of the Euro member Debora Serracchiani, mayor of Albinea, and with a final
salute to veterans of “Operation Bingo,” Livio “Delinger” Piccinini’s 26th Garibaldi Brigade, who spoke on behalf of all other partisan veterans present at the ceremony.  There were readings of texts and poems on the theme of war and resistance by pupils of the Albinea School and performing music and songs related to the concept of freedom.  The children of David Kirkpatrick, player of “Operation Bingo”
in the Italian Bagpipe group “Le Pive nel Sacco,” played the bagpipes.

Tu vivi a Modena.

Fabio Vetro, ranked second in the selected territory “North East Italy 1” of Verona (held on February 24 last year), will play during Folkfest 2012, date and place yet to be determined.  While waiting to listen live, we had a short interview to know him better.

Your show is all about Emilian bagpipes.  Tell us about this instrument, as you’ve discovered it and how it has become part of your life…
Five years ago a friend took me to a folk music concert for the first time ever in my life.  Coming from the studies in the Conservatory, I barely knew about this music and I went there convinced that I would be deeply bored.  On stage the group Bev left me rather speechless.  The vocal singer alternated with other magnificent players with this strange wind instrument.  At the end of the evening I decided to study it.  The curious thing is that I later discovered that other bagpipe players have started playing for the same reason, after listening to this group and its soloist Mark Mainini.

When did the idea come to you to accompany recorded backing tracks played by all of the bagpipe players, and what effect did it have the first time they listened to you?
I think that composing is one of the things I love most in life, the problem is that I love writing for orchestra and given that I will never have and orchestra available, the only remedy was to write songs and play them alone.  My music is sometimes pleasing and sometimes not, but the important thing is that, while I play, I am happy.  Every day, at least half an hour, I go in a large public garden, in an area where there is no one and where I always play alone.  Maybe I do only long notes or technical exercises…there can be sun, rain, heat, cold, it does not matter.  I do not bother anyone and I am happy…better than that!!!

Were you inspired by some model of this choice or do you claim authorship?
I was not inspired by anyone, I love playing my music and I have no other way to do it but…to play.

With a geographically positioned and ancient instrument like the Emilian bagpipes with prefers repertoire, what structural limitations are there and how do you think it might adapt to the globalized sounds of today?
The Emilian bagpipes have the extension of a ninth, you can make sharp but some are risky and unstable, so if possible, it is better to avoid them.  This instrument does have nice repertoire of danceable songs which I think is very suitable for Baroque music.

What effect made you participate in a contest in which you would be judged by a jury and not by the public?  Would a negative result not have had dismal results for your courageous proposal itself?
I had a lot of fun, I played my pieces, I met nice people, could not get any better than that.  It’s clear that a bagpipe alone can not compete with any group, the live is something that also requires an interaction between musicians, a feeling of sounds, gestures, glances, which is transmitted to the viewer and listener, and in my case, is not possible.  I inflate the bag, close my eyes and play, that’s all.

In your card, we read that music for you is above all a passion, deliberately set out in fields of amorality.  Is this a self-imposed limit or greater freedom?
My job is to teach, the rest of the things I do is to delight them.  I hope that this passion for bagpipes doesn’t change.  Some health problems sent me the required use of small bellows under my arm to keep playing and it was like starting over.  To pass a test is a sign that something special must have this tool.

You live in Modena.  What is the situation of live music in Emilia?  What about that of the production companies?
If you want you can hear concerts of all kinds, it’s a shame there is very little money available.  Mi viola teacher (another instrument I love), to give difficult concerts of classical music, studies the entire works, and earns simply ridiculous figures.  For a “Bagpipe Christmas” I earn double.  For the record productions…well it is simple, if you have money, you produce a disk, like all the fans now.
